Live from Haro! Watch out for the Policia!

Wine Add comments

Marc and I are touring the beautiful countryside of Spain and landed in the Rioja Alta region today — Haro, to be exact — home to many of the great bodegas producing “old world” style Tempranillo, Garnacha Tinta, Graciano and Mazuelo.

I was really hoping to share some of our pictures as we make our way from north to south and east to west, but guess what? I found out that adding an AT&T $59 global international 20MB data iphone add-on plan will give you access to upload about nine pictures on a social media platform (e.g. facebook, twitter) — then you hit your limit. DOH!

Sadly, I reached my limit on the very first day of travel, with 13 more days to go. Not right on so many levels — so for now, I’ll  steal borrow pics from the internet and share my own after I return from the states. If you’d like to see what $59 will get you, check out my facebook page. Oh, that’s right, I’m sort of veering off the subject. What about the Policia!?!

Well, after we arrived in Haro, I was surprised to see the plethora of police in such a small town. In a one-mile radius, we observed eight police in Land Cruiser Defenders, Mercedes smart cars, BMW motorcycles, and several other vehicles we couldn’t identify. After seeing no police presence in Madrid, absolutely none in Ribera del Duero (except central Valladolid) and minimal in Bilbao, it was a big surprise. Wait a minute, am I in Napa or Lake County?!? So if you visit, you’ve been forewarned!

More to come as we make our way through this beautiful country. I have a lot of wines to share as well as a great list of restaurant and hotel recommendations you won’t want to miss.

Hi! I live in Logroño, near where you are now. I can tell you about some small wineries that it is worth to visit like Miguel Merino in Briones and Casado Morales in Lapuebla de Labarca. Whatever you need, don’t hesitate in asking me!

Hi Juan, thanks so much for the comment. We are back in the U.S. and its sad we missed your recommendations. We’ll be heading back to Spain in the near future so we’ll be sure to check out your recommendations! BTW, we loved Logroño!

Hi friends. I´m still laughing with your story. We are a family from Haro and we don´t know what was the problem but it´s not usual a lot of police here. Anyway, if you come back to Haro or Logroño please ask us about everything you need and we´ll be pleased to help you. Best regards from Bodegas Vina Hermosa…and careful with the police.

Hi Bodegas Vina Hermosa! Yup, we thought it was unusal to see so many police and assumed something was going on – what that was, who knows! :) Marc and I love Haro and Logroño so we’ll definately be coming back soon. Thanks a million for the invite. We extend the welcome if you visit Portland, Oregon!

We’ll post pictures of our Spain trip shortly…stay tuned!
