1) In the mid-1880s, more wine was produced by volume in Missouri than in any other state.

Did you also know that Missouri became home to the first federally recognized American Viticultural Area when the Augusta AVA received the status on June 20, 1980?

Anyone want to take a wild guess (without looking for the information) what location was the second federally recognized AVA???

2) Robert Mondavi founded the first major winery to be built in Napa Valley since the repeal of Prohibition in 1933.

3) True. Prior to the civil war, Ohio was considered America’s most important wine producing state. In 1860, Ohio produced more wine than any other state in the country.

  1. Christophe - Titus Vineyards Says:

It’s very interesting how we are really just recently paying attention to our own country’s wine producing regions beyond CA and the NW USA. As wine comes into the spotlight it is being recognized that the US has been a sleeping giant as wine producing nation. These are exciting times.

As for the second federally recognized AVA I would like to think CA but it’s probably something like NY.

  2. enobytes Says:

I agree 100% Christophe - the U.S. is rich in wine producing history, which essentially goes beyond the regions of CA and the NW. Another fact – the U.S. has ranked as the #4 wine producing country for a number of years (2006 stats = the U.S. produced 2 million+ tonne (metric ton)). France is the #1 wine producing region, followed by Italy #2, and Spain #3 (note: although Spain has more vineyards than anyone, their vineyards are not as productive).

As for the second federally recognized AVA; your fist instinct is correct – it’s Napa, which was established 2/27/1981!
