Are TSA Restrictions Impacting the Wine Industry?

Travel Add comments

Are TSAs restrictions effecting the way you travel with wine? It’s a good question posed by Annie, one of our forum readers. “Getting wine from point A to point B has always been a bit of a challenge for air travelers. But since the liquid carry-on restrictions went into effect, it’s more difficult than ever”.

She is questioning the effects of these restrictions on people who travel with wine, whether it’s bringing a few bottles home from a wine country trip or taking a special bottle to a vacation destination. So what’s the scoop?

How has TSAs restrictions effected the way you travel with wine?

I manage a small tasting room in the Russian River Valley and we are not able to ship to many states because of all the hoops and money that is involved in that process. I truly think the new restrictions have effected out business. Customers no long buy by the case. This coupled with a recent slow down in business has made things tough. Not to mention a kind of black market wine shipping business that has popped up in every town with a UPS or FedEx store in Sonoma County.

I am fortunate enough to live in a state where I can have wine shipped. I use to check a case of wine with my luggage but since I travel with a lot of baggage, the case of wine usually exceeds what I am allowed to check. I learned out the hard way when the airline charged me an additional $50 fee for the excess baggage (case of wine)!!!

The practical limitations of putting wine in my suitcase wrapped in clothes limit me to only a few bottles and only carrying wine on the trip home. The trip home limitation is the due to the risk of a broken bottle on the clean clothing at the start of a trip. So no local “special” wines as gifts to friends and customers and less wine brought home.
