Post Thanksgiving Fun in the Wine Country

Travel Add comments

If you live in the Pacific Northwest and you love wine, why not find some
time to join in on the fun by visiting the wine country and sampling some of
the best wine Oregon and Washington has to offer. This traditional Thanksgiving
weekend is the oldest and largest event in the Pacific Northwest and visitors
come from miles to visit hundreds of wineries located throughout the Washington
and Oregon region.

Many of the wineries are only open a few times a year (and some only open during this event), so if you’ve always wanted to drop in on a particular winery that is normally closed to the general public, now is the time to visit. Many wineries present special offerings including barrel tastings and newly released samples as well as music and food. Turkey Tom loves his wine!Gobble Gobble!

Just keep in mind that this event pulls in the crowds, so if you are not
particularly fond of large group gatherings, it may not be the best time
to visit. Most wineries are packed with oenophiles and food lovers alike,
so come prepared to fight the crowds.

Additionally, visiting several tasting rooms can get expensive over the Thanksgiving holiday, especially if you’re in toe of several family members. On the average, many charge a $10-15 tasting fee (even those who typically do not charge at other times), but the fee usually includes something extra like a Reidel glass, or maybe appetizers and live music. Others may offer barrel tastings or "future" releases which can cost a bit more, typically around $30.

These prices really aren’t that bad considering what you get. Yes, it’s difficult to shell out a tasting fee when many wineries do not typically charge throughout the year, but if you factor in the extras, it’s hard to beat.

If you are willing to spend the money and you don’t mind crowds, the Pacific
Northwest Wine Country Thanksgiving event is the perfect way to spend a
fun weekend with friends and family. Events take place Friday (the day after Thanksgiving) through Sunday. For more information, visit the Oregonian’s Holiday Guide to Oregon Wineries.
