If you don’t think global warming is impacting the wine industry, think again

Green Wine, News Add comments

Is global warming and climate change affecting grape production worldwide? Yes, it is and the implications are real. Don’t believe me? Do an Internet search on “wine industry + global warming + climate change”, then listen to our winemakers across the globe, because they have plenty to say. You will be astounded on the vast…

…amount of stories that touch on this subject. My own authoritative source produced 3,893 stories alone, and Google will get you a million or so results on the subject. I’ve included just a handful of the stories I came across below. I recommend you do your own search, read up on the subject at hand and come up with your own conclusions. On July 30, 2007, Internationally recognized for research on the effects of climate change in the wine industry, Pancho Campo, Spanish wine educator and founder of the Wine Academy of Spain, addressed more than 120 influential winegrowers, vintners and media, representing countries as far away as Spain, Great Britain and Argentina, at Gloria Ferrer Caves & Vineyards. Here is another story that is quite good, presented by Greg Jones, associate professor of geography at Southern Oregon University on global warming’s impact on wine growing regions worldwide. I agree that global warming and climate change is impacting the industry significantly.

Here is another article I found on Wine Business.com about a conference held in Barcelona, Spain, hosted by host Pancho Campo in 2006. I found the figure about the climate-maturity groupings quite interesting; they are based on relationships between phenological requirements and climate for high to premium quality wine production in the world’s benchmark regions for each variety.

Thanks to all for posting additional links! Global, many of us in the wine industry understand the impacts of climate change; it affects our economy, agriculture, forests, wildlife, water resources, coastal areas, oceans, human health and society. Many wine growers and winemakers see and understand the impacts. Wine consumers may not. This post is an attempt to educate our consumers. Nevertheless, thank you for the link!

…and keep the links and comments coming!
