CLINE CELLARS Zinfandel 2004
designation: Ancient Vines
vineyard: Oakley vineyards
region: California - Other
review date:
2006-05-04

Oakley vineyards have always produced quality zinfandel since the late 80's - most of the fruit for this wine comes from there. Cline built a loyal clientele from a pretty simple concept. Sell honest wine and keep your tasting room open an hour later than everyone else. It doesn't hurt that they are the last vineyard you pass on your way back to San Francisco from Napa and parts of Sonoma. How they gained a loyal following doesn't really matter; the fact that they have been able to keep it and expand it is a testament to the quality they put in the bottle not in marketing. Big, big structure holds the balanced fruit in a package that could be consumed without food - not something usually said about big red zinfandels. Cuisine that does not go with this wine would be easier to list than everything it would be good with.
