About this site

Enobytes ("Eno"short for Enology: a science that deals with wine and wine making, & bytes: A collection of organized bits of information) has been around since 1996.

Back then, founders Marc Hinton and Pamela Heiligenthal provided consulting services for the wine and restaurant industry in the San Francisco area. Since then, the company has evolved radically.

In 2006, the online version of Enobytes.com emerged as we expanded our services to educate and share our passion and knowledge of wine and food with our readers across the globe.

Today, thousands of readers and a half a million hits from 52 foreign countries visit Enobytes.com each month.

Our vision is simple: to promote an exchange of ideas that benefit professionals and enthusiasts alike. We consider our publication an alternative source to mainstream wine periodicals with an emphasis on bridging the gap between consumers and wine industry professionals.

Enobytes.com is a respected wine resource for enophiles looking for wine reviews, maps, vintage charts and commentary about the wine & restaurant industry.

Some of our features that set us apart from other online publications and blogs is that we are one of the first pioneering sites to create wine region maps using Google Earth technology . We are also the first in the industry to review winery tasting rooms©, and we also offer unique opportunities for enthusiasts and professionals to communicate and exchange ideas with wine industry leaders thorough our Vino Exchange forum segment.

In addition to writing and tasting for Enobytes.com, Pamela and Marc also contribute as wine bloggers for OregonLive.com (Wine Bytes) and has appeared on Portland's "Vine Time" on News Radio 750 KXL and on California's Central Coast "From the Growing of the Grape to the Glass" on KUHL-AM 1410. Enobytes also received accolades from InstallEarth.org for our Google Earth wine map efforts.

Based in Portland, Pamela Heiligenthal is Enobytes Senior Editor and reports on the Willamette Valley, Burgundy, Bordeaux, Spain, New York and California regions.

As Enobytes co-founder, she left Harvard to pursue opportunities in the wine and restaurant industry. She

spent a number of years working as a Restaurant Manager and Wine Buyer in Boston and San Francisco before working directly with the California wine industry.

In 1996, she completed her introductory level Master Sommelier certificate examination from the Court of Master Sommeliers in Kapolei, HI and began judging for Anthony Dias Blue's San Francisco International Wine Competition as well as other well-respected competitions including Vineyard & Winery Management and the Food & Beverage Journal. Her love for flight and adventure directed her to obtain a Private Pilot's license in 1999, where she spent many hours experiencing a birds-eye view of California's striking winery landscape. She also obtained her Master's degree in Software Engineering from the University of Maryland.

Today, she balances her life as a cellar rat and journalist for Enobytes and OregonLive.com while working as a technical architect for a major aeronautical company. She also attends U.C. Davis focusing on Viticulture and Enology in preparation for the Master of Wine (MoW) Exam. If you want to find out six wacky things that most people don’t know about her, check out the "I've Been Tagged!" post.

True to her roots, Pamela seeks varietal and appellation integrity when analyzing wines, and is always passionate in finding the next great bottle of wine.

Edward Ragg - Regional Correspondent (China)
Edward Ragg - Enobytes Regional Correspondent

Based in Beijing, Edward Ragg reports on the ever changing and developing wine industry in China.

Edward Ragg is co-founder, with his wife Fongyee Walker, of Dragon Phoenix Fine Wine Consulting, Beijing’s first independent wine consulting company. A former Captain of the Cambridge University Blind-Wine Tasting Team, he has judged at the International Wine Challenge and Shanghai International

Wine Challenge. Ragg holds the WSET Advanced Certificate and Introductory Sommelier Certificate from The Court of Master Sommeliers but he is returning to wine school and listens attentively to Fongyee, mainland China’s only Master of Wine candidate.

Ragg is also a writer. His poetry was most recently collected in Carcarnet Press’s New Poetries IV anthology and he has published poems in PN Review, Critical Quarterly, Agenda, Seam, The New Writer and California Press’s Gastronomica magazine. He completed a Ph.D. on the work of Wallace Stevens at Cambridge in 2005 and was subsequently a Research Fellow at The Rothermere American Institute, Oxford. He recently co-edited and contributed to Wallace Stevens across the Atlantic (London: Palgrave, 2008) and will shortly publish his own study of Stevens. He still teaches a class in literature at Tsinghua University, Beijing and is preparing a first book of poetry.

Ragg now writes extensively about wine as guest blogger for Catavino and Visit Vineyards as well serving as a wine columnist for The Beijinger, The Insider’s Guide to Beijing, The Financial Times’s FT Rui magazine and China’s top financial newspaper Caijing Ribao. With Fongyee Walker, he is co-author of the Dragon Phoenix Wine Blog, but still has much to learn about Wine Web 2.0. His brother, Michael Ragg, is MD of the Burgundian négociant éleveur Mischief & Mayhem.

Peter Nixon - Regional Correspondent (Australia)

Based in Melbourne, Peter Nixon reports on the Australian wine industry.

Peter has recently joined high profile national wine retailer Dan Murphy’s in the role of Fine Wine Marketing Manager. Prior to this position Peter managed the Qantas Wine Program for 3-years where he was highly regarded by the Australian wine industry for his efforts in elevating the potential of the airline as an international ambassador to the Australian wine industry.

Peter has an associate diploma in Wine Marketing from Adelaide University along with considerable experience in the on and off-premise wine & hospitality trade both in Australia and the UK. He has also completed the Advanced Wine Assessment course at the Australian wine research institute.

Peter has been involved in professional show-judging both in Australia (Royal Melbourne and Winewise Boutique Wine Awards) and internationally (Decanter UK World Wine Awards). He was also involved in wine selection for Air New Zealand as a member of the Air New Zealand wine panel alongside John Buck OBE (Te Mata Estate) and John Buck (Foxes Island).

Though Peter strongly supports the view that the show system has inherent limitations, namely too often overlooking restrained, subtle & complex wines in favour of more-obvious "show" styles, he does believe that those wines succeeding generally do deserve recognition. In addition, for those wines overlooked, the growing culture of independent wine assessment via reputable wine writers (blogs or traditional print media) provides balance. "As with similar humanity areas such film, art or interior design identifying an informed critic or range of critics with whom you identify with is fundamental."

Peter is also an avid foodie with a commercial cookery certificate, however realized early in the piece it was wiser to marry a chef than become one. His wife Margaret Nixon has worked at iconic Sydney establishments including Bistro Moncur, Eleni’s and Paramount. She is currently studying a PhD in Psychology. "If you have met many chefs you might appreciate that this change of career is not as radical as you might at first have thought."

Peter welcomes the opportunity to contribute to Enobytes "the best examples of Australian wine can and do compete sit comfortably alongside those from anywhere on the planet and I am honoured to be supporting the industry by raising awareness of Australia’s finest wines and producers."
